Paul Allen patents the User Interface

More precisely, it wasn’t actually Paul Allen himself, but one of his companies that got the patent back in 1996, and another of his companies which is now suing the world (“AOL, Apple, eBay, Facebook, Google, Netflix, Office Depot, OfficeMax, Staples, Yahoo and YouTube”), over patent infringement. For basically anything which can get a set of content data plus instructions for displaying that data, then display it “unobtrusively” in a manner that does not distract the user from the primary display.

I think YouTube is in the clear though, as their peripheral content (e.g., ads popping up in the middle of videos) is anything but unobtrusive.
